Can A Chiari Malformation Cause CSF Flow Obstruction?

Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I would love for you to help me. I have had bad headaches since age 5. I have had a tracheotomy (age 2), strider thereafter, a sling (due to frequent urination), have been diagnosed with migraines, atypical facial pain, multiple teeth removed (due to facial swelling) and sinus surgery. I am on multiple meds such as Ibuprophen 800, tegretol, nortriptyline, klonopin, Maxalt, Imitrex and ventolin . I have an MRI stating Chiari 1 with 6 mm low lying cerebral tonsils. Lately my eye and ear are acting up. My ear feels clogged and my eye sees spots, gets cloudy and blurry and my face swells all on the left side. The last time I went to the ER they called CODE STROKE due to facial swelling and numbness on the same side. After an EKG and MRI stating Chiari 1 the ER physician said "this is normal, do not come back to the ER"...My PA friend was with me...She was like???? They should Not have told you that, I work for an ambulatory surgery center and the Dr.s feel I need surgery but Kaiser has me taking meds only. I am 5.5 feet & 145 lbs and do hot yoga daily, I dont drink & eat well ....Today was bad! I could not go to work because of my "new" eye issues... Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Chiari Malformation can cause CSF flow obstruction.Surgery needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am here to help you. I have read your question with care and understand your concerns.

Chiari Malformation causes obstruction to flow of CSF. CSF or Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid which circulates around the brain

Most of your symptoms, including the eye symptoms , ear clogging and headache are due to this.

When surgery is done to make the CSF Flow normal, your symptoms will improve dramatically.
I suggest you to consult a neurosurgeon at the earliest

Hope you found the answer helpful.

That is exactly what the surgeons I work for are telling me...Should I ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon with Kaiser? ASI (MY) Dr.s say that Kaiser nuerosurgeons are risky and what am I looking at if I dont have surgery? Are the meds I am on helping or am I only ensuring Parkinsons by taking them? PS, my husband and I are SUPER impressed for 15 bucks :)

Brief Answer:
Medicines will not help for Chiari . Surgery is needed

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Chiari with eye symptoms with clogging of ears with headache will not be cured by medicines

Surgery is definitely needed. Sooner the better.

The surgery will be a simple procedure and in XXXXXXX it costs around $4000 . Side effects are very rare and dramatic recovery is seen in most patients

The decision about which Surgeon to choose can be best left to your Primary Care Physician or Family doctor.

All the best for quick recovery
Take care
