Can Hormone Imbalance Cause Body Odour?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 May 2015
Question: I rarely eat prosciutto, but last night I had a salad with quite a bit, along with Feta and Gorgonzola and baked ziti (with garlic of course). I had one Martini and one glass of red wine. The next I was sent home from work because my manager said I smelled of alcohol. I know certain food odors come out through your pores, but I drink wine with dinner everyday and nothing has ever been said. My manager said I was giving off something different and alcohol. Could it have been the ham?

Brief Answer:
Cumulative effect of hormones, prosciutto and garlic

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I do think that the prosciutto could have caused your perspiration to smell different and unpleasant.

But I would also like to include the garlic in the picture here. Garlic, especially in women, along with some hormonal influence (which could be due to the menopause and/or the thyroid abnormality) can cause an unpleasant odour from the body. I am assuming from your age that you are either post-menopausal or around menopause (peri-menopausal), this along with the fact that you have an underlying thyroid abnormality can easily cause the hormonal imbalance. This means you indeed will have a hormonal imbalance, and the possible cumulative effect of the ham, garlic and your hormones could be the reason why your body gave out an odour that was unpleasant to the people around you.

I hope you find my response helpful ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help. And yes, do drink plenty of water when you choose to have the blamed ingredients, and avoid the wine during these meals, it only makes things worse.

Best wishes ma'am.
