Can Stress Cause Constipation?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: Hi,
for several months I have suffered from severe constipation. Also I have lost significant weight - down to about 85 KG from 105, and have noticed the loss is particularly on my legs & feet although all over body.....ALSO I have developed Tremors on my Left hand and significant leg & feet (Both) feel tingling/ pins & needles feeling. I am waiting to see a neurologist to confirm whether I have Parkinsons or MS or Whatever !! I am 75 years old Male and have been suffering significant depression from financial anxiety and general stress as I have just gone Bankrupt and have stopped a long term Business activity so I am now an Aged Pensioner in rented accommodation with my ageing wife (c.80 Years old). I believe the stress has brought on the constipation and maybe everything else ?
Also I have just had my left eye Cataract replaced successfully (!! for a change in my life) by a Lens and am due to have right eye done next Thursday.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of parkinson's to be evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
At 75 age, tingling in lower limbs may be suggestion of neuropathy. The etiological workup requires nerve conduction study, vitamin B12 levels, myeloma workup, diabetes, renal function and liver function testing.

Similar complains of tingling with wasting and weakness of lower limbs with or without low back pain may be due to lumbosacral radiculopathy and may require neuroimaging of spine after confirmation by neurologist on examination.

Constipation may be a symptom of depression, hypothyroidism, local pathology of intestine requiring thyroid profile and colonoscopy with ultrasound abdomen.

Tremors , depression, constipation may be symptoms of parkinson's disease also but weight loss requires evaluation.
Tremors in parkinson's is usually unilateral on onset , resting and may be associated with slowness of daily activities , gait, stooped posture.

You should visit and consult the neurologist with all previous records for complete examination and evaluation. You may require above mentioned investigations for diagnosis.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
