Can The HIV Virus Survive Outside The Body?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Aug 2016
Question: Hello , 3 days ago i went to the hospital mainly to the respiratory system department and i met the specialist. The doctor wanted to see whether i have sorethroat or not so he inserted a used and not hygienic tongue depressor in my mouth mistakenly, it was used by another one patient at least and those already used tongue depressors will be put in a plastic box after using them. Inside the plastic box will see many used tongue depressors so he picked one of them randomely and inserted it in my mouth then returned the tongue depressor to the same plastic box. I asked him why u did like that; hs said i am sorry i forgot and please go and wash your mouth instantly. I have 2 worries , the first one is the one at least who used the tongue depressor before me and the second is the plastic box which contains a lot of used and not hygienic depressors. The box will not be changed or washed as i saw them they will only remove depressors every couple of hours, the box was wet , i saw some saliva in the box , so the box is full of bacteria and viruses. What kind of diseases may i catch ? HIV, Hepatitis, HPV , HSV1,2 ,Syphilis, or maybe others? And what strains of HSV and HPV if i may catch?

Brief Answer:
chances of getting infection is less

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the query
I can understand your concern.
Viruses Or any causing infection like HIV,HPV,HSV,Syphilis cannot survive outside the living body for a long time , they will die within few minutes , when they exposed to outer environment.
Chances of infection will be there only when these viruses transferred from either blood or any body fluids to body fluids or through the skin if it has any cut over it.

So even if the doctor has used it to any infected person before you, chances of you getting infected is less.

Take care
Thank you

Thanks doctor.

The box as it's shown in the attached file was closed and wet , i saw saliva inide wether on the tongue depressors or on the walls of the box, so in general the medium was wet and the viruses and becaterias can live in this environment right? Like the saliva on the tongue depressors or the walls may contain the HIV or HBV or HSV or HPV viruses and can live in this medium even they are out of the body right? What i want to say they are in an active medium and good place to survive , am i right? The chances of getting one of those are nil or negligible ? Should i do STDs tests?

Brief Answer:
chances of getting infection is negligible

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing again
Do not worry , even if it saliva , virus and bacteria cant survive for long time, it will die in minutes. virus and bacteria need special media to grow with specified temperature, pH, salts, nutrients etc.
Survival of viruses in even special media requires freezing temperature.
These can be grown only in high tech laboratories.
So do not worry.
and these virus never spreads orally, because it gets died as it enters stomach because of acidity secretion by it.

Take care

Thanks again ... Washing toilets with only water before using them is enough to prevent HIV transmission? Washing anything with water can kill the virus and prevent the transmission in case of its existence? PCR HIV and HBVtest can be conclusive after 32 days? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
folllow bellow instructions

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks again
HIV will not spread by using same toilets, sharing cloths, sharing utensils and other things.
Its mode of transmission is through blood and organ transfusion, sexual contact, usage of same needles and other invasive instruments.
No, HIV will not get killed by water. It required Hydrogen peroxide 2% for 30 min.
PCR HIV and HBV are 99% conclusive.

Take care

Thanks doctor,
Sometimes we use public toilets and it is not hygienic, there is a chance to have body fluids whether from men or women on the toilet seat so the virus can transmit to us if there is breach in our skin right? We cannnot provide an antiseptic or even water sometimes to clean the toilet seat , in this case we may acquire HIV or other STDs?
Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
hi
Thanks again
Chances of infecting with virus is almost nil by using public toilets.
But chances of bacterial infection causing Urinary tract infection and other STD are there.
So in such cases you have to wash commode before using or you can use tissue paper for the same.
