Question: Hi I recently had a urine test for my job. It came back positive for amphetamines. The only meds I take are synthroid for thyroid and Lexapro. That morning I took one Percocet because I have been doctoring for migraines and were prescribed by the ER Dr.

Brief Answer:
percocet can show false positive for opioid

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Common medicines/drugs showing false positive for amphetamines are :
Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, propylephedrine, phenylephrine, or desoxyephedrine (Nyquil, Contact, Sudafed, Allerest, Tavist-D, Dimetapp, etc)
Phenegan-D, Robitussin Cold and Flu, Vicks Nyquil
Over-the-counter diet aids with phenylpropanolamine (Dexatrim, Accutrim)
Over-the-counter nasal sprays (Vicks inhaler, Afrin)
Asthma medications (Marax, Bronkaid tablets, Primatine Tablets)
Prescription medications (Amfepramone, Cathne, Etafediabe, Morazone, phendimetrazine, phenmetrazine, benzphetamine, fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, dexdenfluramine,Redux, mephentermine, Mesocarb, methoxyphenamine, phentermine, amineptine, Pholedrine, hydroymethamphetamine, Dexedrine, amifepramone, clobenzorex, fenproyorex, mefenorex, fenelylline, Didrex, dextroamphetamine, methphenidate, Ritalin, pemoline, Cylert, selegiline, Deprenyl, Eldepryl, Famprofazone, bupropion, fluoxetine, sertraline)

Among medicines you are taking synthyroid cannot cause false positive, for lexapro there is no evidence of false positive but for other SSRI (fluoxetine and sertraline) there are some reports and percoret can show false positive for opioids not for amphetamine.

Check above list that by chance you have not taken any of them. If not so then the least possibility that lexapro is culprit but there is no confirm evidence.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,

Dr.Chintan Solanki.
