Question : Dear Doctor,
My son (4 years old) had fever a few days ago, went to the doctor (a General Practitioner). As per his advice we were giving "Refid Plus" thrice a day (5ml-5ml-5ml) for three days. Later it looked like the fever is reduced. We stopped giving the medicines.
From past 2-3 days my son was a little dull, his palm & forehead were a little hot so we consulted the Pediatrician & explained the same that he had fever a few days ago & also about "Refid Plus". When he checked the temperature, it was 98 degree Fahrenheit. He suspected Typhoid & suggested some tests to check the platelet counts & other details. He also prescribed the following:
Coldhit (5ml-5ml-5ml)
Macpod - 100 (3.5ml - 0 - 3.5ml)
Please refer to the attachments (Lab Reports, Doctor Prescription).
Pls suggest what to do

Brief Answer:
Seems some hidden mild infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for trusting us with your query.

I have seen the reports and prescription. It is a normal report, only slightly increased lymphocyte level. It means that immunity has started working.

This seems like a viral infection. Mostly children may get sore throat, which may infect middle ear causing a prolonged infection.

I would suggest the following:
- Get your child examined by a doctor nicely for lung congestion or ear infection.
- Most such viral infections resolve by themselves. Kindly keep patience.
- Keep a record of temperature three times a day for atleast 5-7 days. You can use a digital oral thermometer.
- Coldhit will bring down any mucous secretion in throat. If there is no mucous, then coldhit is not needed
- Macpod is an antibiotic. If its started then a complete needs to be done. I think it must be started after getting examined childs ears.

Children have a great immunity and usually recover by themselves. We can help by providing then a germ-free environment and hygienic food. In fact even if exposed to some germs, it helps in building their immunity.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you so much for providing such convincing answer.
I was just looking at the lab report & going through the parameters mentioned on it. As there are two columns (Result(s) & Biological Reference Interval), I was able to take a look but couldn't understand a few things.
Can you please brief on the below?
'TOTAL & DIFFERENTIAL COUNT'
(1) Electrical Impedence: NEUTROPHILS % : In children it should be Children (Children:2 - 6 Years) : 30 - 53% [but my son has 22.30 % which is lesser than the ideal range]
(2) Flow Cytometry: LYMPHOCYTES % : In children it should be Children (Children:2 - 6 Years) : 30 - 60% [my son has 64.70 % which is more than the ideal range]
(3) Flow Cytometry: MONOCYTES % : In children it should be Children (Children:2 - 6 Years) : 2 - 8% [my son has 9.40 % which is agai more than the ideal range]
What are NEUTROPHILS, LYMPHOCYTES & MONOCYTES & what it means if these are above or below the average level as mentioned above?
pls explain in detail.

Pls look at the new attachments

Brief Answer:
Yes there is increased lymphocytes

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

NEUTROPHILS, LYMPHOCYTES & MONOCYTES are different types of white blood cells. Different types of blood cells may be raised or lowered in different types of conditions. Their may be normal variation in values as well.

Lymphocytes and monocytes are probably increased because of infection. Since its a percentage, neutrophils are low. Its a cumulative value.

Its not to be worried. It becomes normal when infection is gone.
