Do Traveling And Change In Altitude Have An Effect On The Menstrual Pattern?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: Hello. I was in XXXXXXX for a week in April. I started my period earlier than I expected when I was there. I had my period for 2 days in the mountains before flying back to XXXXXXX Now back in XXXXXXX I expected to start my period and am 4-5 days late. I am not on birth control, but took a lot of caution during sex with my partner. We have also been travelling nearby and only had sex twice since my last period. Is it possible the travel has made my period late? I was also in Florida before my trip to XXXXXXX SO in one month I went from XXXXXXX to Florida to XXXXXXX to XXXXXXX and home. Thanks!

I have been under an unusually high amount of stress over the last month and even minor anxiety attacks.

I had read that travel between time zones and altitude changes can affect your menstrual cycle. Is this at all true?

It seems like it might just be stress. I had planned on taking a test if I don't get my period in a few days. I had been on birth control for 10+ years and about 6 months ago stopped taking the pill for personal reasons. The first few months my period came about every 26-27 days. It seems the last few months the time between each cycle is getting a bit longer, so I'm not exactly sure when my period will start or if it is normal for the cycle to adjust. The last two cycles have increased by about 2 days each time.

Brief Answer:
Delay is likely to be due to pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Stress, anxiety and travel between time zones are common reasons for delay in periods. A delay by 4-5 days is not worrisome. The chances of pregnancy are low. The delay in periods is more likely to be due to travelling.
After you stop taking the pills, it takes a few cycles for the normal hormonal balance of the body to restore. It is best to wait for a few days more and then test your urine for pregnancy in case the periods do not start.
