Brief Answer:
Nasal decongestants can cause hypertension.

Detailed Answer:
Hello welcome to HCM XXXXXXX

Your concerns about Nasal decongestants are correct but beta sitosterol is usually safe in this regards.

Nasal decongestants are known to cause hypertension especially after prolonged use. It's contents are usually phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline all have known side effects of hypertension.

Topical drugs has to be taken at a higher dosage then oral medication. So chances of hypertension is high even after topical use.

It has been recommended by USFDA that patients of following diseases should avoid or take miminal dosage of Nasal decongestants.

1.Hypertension
2.Heart disease
3.Diabetes(some agents are known to cause rise in blood sugar levels)
4.Thyroid diseases
5 Prostate enlargement

Also Nasal decongestants has many drug interactions with other medication. So avoid usage of this medicines without expert opinion if you have hypertension.

Thank you.
Have a nice day.

I take nasal decongestant because I have deviated septum.

For the last 5 days, I have been having dizzy/light headedness several times a day...and my BP is running 155/95. Is there a mild dose of BP medicine I can take? And can you prescribe this for me? (I'm in Colorado)
Thank you Doctor.

Brief Answer:
Kindly read my detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back to HCM.

I have read your concerns about blood pressure medications.

DNS (Deviated Nasal septum) leads to recurrent common Cold and congestion, that is true. But to use decongestants for that is not necessary.
Do steam inhalation regularly, use oral anti histaminic agents when necessary (cetrizine or levocetrizine)
There are surgeries available for permanent cure of DNS.

So, my advice is try to reduce Nasal and oral decongestants use as possible as you can and do all diet and exercise precautions you can take.
Then just go for 24 hrs blood pressure monitoring and then if blood pressure is still more than 150/90 mmhg, your doctor will start a small dose medicine for hypertension.

I am sorry, I can't prescribe you online any blood pressure medicines. You need a written prescription from your doctor. We have discussed also previously about hypertension, so just Kindly follow My advice, you will get benefited for sure.

I hope I have given you satisfactory answer, if you feel same then Kindly rate the answer.
Thank you.
Have a nice day.
