Does Clonazepam Cause Cognitive Impairment?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Mar 2017
Question: Hi I have been on clonazepam for panic disorder for almost twenty years. I have problems remembering things as simple as a family member asking me to do something 5 min. Later. I am on a blood thinner and minutes after I thought I took it, I can't remember if I took it or not. I avoid my XXXXXXX checking the mail, cannot keep up with daily activities and constantly forget people's names right after I met them. I'm also horrible at interrupting people because I'm afraid I'm going to forget what I was going to add to the conversation. I can't retain when I read simple literature. Not sure but I know what I'm doing is not working for me. I had a doctor a month ago ask me if I was add cuz her Saud he was and I was jumping subjects so quickly without finishing a thought, that he asked me that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
I think you need to stop clonazepam

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I have two suggestions for you.

First the clonazepam should be reconsidered as part of your prescription. It is well known fact across the medical sciences that long term use of benzodiazepines causes cognitive impairment and I am of the opinion that this particular part should be removed. This is important as many of your current complains are contributed by clonazepam if not caused completely.

Secondly if the forgetfulness and other things are of recent origin there is need to look beyond the possibility of ADD. I must acknowledge that AAD is most likely diagnosis but if the things are of recent origin or there is recent worsening we can not attribute to them with ADD.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.
