Does A CT Scan Detect Blood Clots In The Heart?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Jun 2017
Question: my wife had a knee replacement many years ago. she had a ct scan because of tia and uti. hospital said she cannot have an mri because of the knee replacement,. they sent her home with an antibiotic. her primary care person is on vacation for the next two weeks. Should I do anything other than wait for the doctor's app.?

sorry, I did not inform you that the ct scan the hospital did was negative. What I did not think to ask was if that ct scan was of the whole body or just the head. In other words, would the ct scan pick up a blood clot in the heart region or in an artery?

Brief Answer:
CT of head only likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
CT scan is likely to cover the head region only if it was done for TIA. CT scan cannot detect a clot in heart region. However it can help in detecting some atherosclerotic changes.
I hope this answers your query.

1)is there an mri for persons who have had metal knee replacements? Hospital told me that they couldn't do an mri.....were they correct or is there a type of mri that can be safely done even with an older type knee replacement.
2) Since an UTI can evidently cause some of the same effects as a TIA, the hospital discharged her with an antibiotic and a recommendation to see her primary care physician after 7 days. As I wrote before, her primary care physician is on vacation for two weeks. Can she safely wait for two weeks before getting any type follow-up. She is completely helpless: balance, eating, talking, etc.

Brief Answer:
Can wait for 2 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. MRI scan is not done with metal replacement anywhere in the body. The evaluation is less accurate. it can be done if there is no other alternative.
2. You can wait for 2 weeks. if her sensorium deteriorates then do attend an ER.
Hope my answer is helpful.
