Does Medication For Vitamin B12 Deficiency Help In Treating Trigeminal Neuralgia?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: My husband suffers from Trigeminal Neuralgia, he takes Tegretol, and I have noticed he has to take more to get relief. He has also tried Baclofen, but found that it did not do as well as the Tegretol. He will not have surgery. I recently read that a deficiency of B12, may help. Is there anything you can recommend (besides surgery) that will help him. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see him in such pain. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Other drugs like lamotrigine, gabapentin , pregabalin may be tried

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Trigeminal neuralgia is postulated to be caused by compression of trigeminal nerve root in brain due to vascular loops.
The symptoms of lancinating electric episodes of pain may be very disabiling and may occur many times a day precipitated by eating, touching, exposure to air.
Medical treatment usually is done with drugs like carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, lamotrigine, pregabalin, gabapentin, amitryptylline, phenytoin.
Surgical treatment is advised after evaluation regarding culprit blood vessel by MRI imaging specially FIESTA sequence.
Other treatment like ablation of nerve peripherally by alcohol aor other agents may be tried.
In case of any deficiency supplementation can be given but the causal relationship is not proved yet.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
