Does Viral Infection In The Stomach Cause Facial Numbness?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question:
I had a temporary facial numbness after 2 stomach bugs, they were about 3 wks apart after . I found a site that said this is possible because it's a virus infection. I wish I could find that site again. Unfortunately I got others that said things like sclerderma als ms. I feel fine it went a way it did not stay. I would think the above I would have more symptoms. this has thrown me into a full blown anxiety. I've had 2 bad experiences with doctors. causing phobias. I 'm trying to get across that it did not stay numb everyone is misunderstanding this. it left after a few mins. please do not tell me I have a serious disease I"ll find that out soon enough. I can't have anymore anxiety. Please. do not do this.
At this site a person says he gets this all the way down his side briefly on and off for months. eventually it went away. I 'm not tired I can walk I have no pain so not neuropathy again that would stay. so would bell's palsy again this leaves I have no headaches no back or neck aches nothing. I don't get a lot of sleep and still have energy. I can walk appetite good wish it wasn't but it is. I'm considered a XXXXXXX citizen. again don't start me on the path to more anxiety if it's serious I'll know soon enough and will deal with it then. I want to know that what these few people said is true a virus infection such as 2 stomach flus could have caused this because it happened right after the second bout. please I have enough anxiety no the anxiety started after the doctors wonderful diagnosis of the above. thank you.

I don't understand not enough for stomach flu?????. I would think being that it happened right after the second bout I heard viral infections do cause this. Plus dehydration. I had dark urine and a very dry inside nose. there are many viruses out there. An MRI right now I doubt I'll be able to do it. too much anxiety for me. Now even more. My main concern was all this talk about ALS MS Scelerderma and more. that has set me off. one more question are there doctors who will put people like me to sleep because I don't know If I can even manage a neurologist. I prefer to be sedated forever if possible of course I'm exaggerating.

Brief Answer:
One Episode of Numbness is not enough to Diagnose ALS MS Scelerderma

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back to HealthcareMagic.com

Let me Explain. The fact here is You got an episode of numbness after Stomach Flu. There are three possibilities

One : Stomach Flu caused Numbness
Two : There is something Common which caused both Stomach Flu and Numbness
Three : Both are unrelated

Since there has been only one episode, the chances of both being unrelated (possibility three) are high.

Also You have only one symptom ie Numbness. And That has happened only once. And you have told that it is temporary. With this single episode of single symptom which has already recovered, we cannot diagnose ALS MS Scleroderma

Usually, we do not perform MRI after the first episode. Only when the episodes recur or if the numbness persists, MRI is done as a routine.

Hence, We have to wait. There is nothing to be done at the moment.

But If you are anxious about waiting, may be you can prefer to do a MRI right now itself.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

thank you and I bothered you enough. So I'll finish with this. and to clear up something. re; the stomach bug. The numbness came after the bug. I was visiting in a nursing home and a bad stomach flu was going around I caught it. approximately 3 wks later it happened again I caught it. It was right after that this numbness occurred. and went away. I doubt if I can ever go through an MRI. It's much too confining. I've had bad experiences with doctors and it's left me with this problem a phobia I guess you'd call it. Before you say therapy, I talked to a psychologist and she said I'm perfectly normal. According to someone I found online and I can't find again. Said he had periodic bouts of facial numbness down to his foot. lasts a few mins. and leaves . It went on for a few mos. and so far nothing. He said it's usually due to an infection a viral infection that attacked the nerve. Why it's periodic and intermittent who knows.. Also it can be due to a vitamin deficiency. In my case I was hoping it was because of the dehydration.... I thought I'd hydrated enough but I had dark urine and a dryness inside my nose. After reading what you sent I now am totally confused.
What I don't understand is if it's something as serious as what I mentioned, wouldn't I be dizzy immobile all kinds of symptoms?????. why do I feel OK, and also, as this person related he felt the same way in between episodes normal . I was hoping you could give me a little relief that it could be something very benign. I know it's going to happen again, because what he described is what has happened to me. Right now I feel like go to bed and bury myself under the covers. Of course I won't. just on pins and needles waiting for another episode. Still hard to believe there are no other symptoms. I'm not afraid of death just how I die. And those diseases are terrible . at my age, I think I'll just wait. I was hoping you'd give me some sort of hope ...even if it is false hope at least it helps me to go on. thank you again for your help, but didn't really help the anxiety except now I feel a little better, thinking what will be will be if it's a serious thing it will come out. I do believe I will have it again. I had a little tingling but it left quickly. Sorry to be such a pest and neurotic. but was looking for this viral infection as a cause. I thought you'd agree it could be that. I'd like to conclude with : this is the 21st century people should not be suffering there must be ways to keep people comfortable. I suppose that's my fear.

Brief Answer:
One Episode is not to be feared

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

I understand that you were looking for Viral Infection as a Cause. But, Based on one temporary episode of numbness which has recovered, we cannot call it as Viral.

You are right when you say "if it's something as serious as what I mentioned, wouldn't I be dizzy immobile all kinds of symptoms". You were hoping I could give you a little relief that it could be something very benign. I have very clearly told that a single episode is nothing to be afraid of.

That is exactly what I had said in my previous replies.

Summing up all what you have said, My Opinion is that
1. There is not enough symptoms to relate the Stomach Flu and the Numbness
2. There is nothing to be done as of now, since the Numbness has recovered

I would suggest you to please wait and observe. Only if you are getting this numbness again, we may have to proceed further and ask you to consult a Neurosurgeon and get a MRI Done.

I suppose the above replies will help your anxiety

Can you please specify what makes you anxious inspite of the above replies.
Have I left any question unanswered ?

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
