default
Posted on Thu, 1 Nov 2012
Question:
Hi, i have a problem for the last 2 years. I am 24. Sometimes during these years i feel like my heart will stop or better it beats very strong(not fast but strong)and suddenly i feel some pressure on my head(on the sides exactly next to my eyes, on both sides)! When that happens i feel like i am going to faint, the pressure from these spots starting to spread in the rest of my head! It lasts maximum 5 sec and then the pressure goes away, i am sweating a little not much, and my heart goes very fast!after 2-3 mins i am fine! This episode happened 4 times the last 2 years!
But many other times i feel this small pressure on the sides of my head as i mentioned without the rest episode! Its not a big pressure but it happens! Any idea please?

Hello and thanks for posing the query
I have read your query in mail. There are number of possibilities in which these types of symptoms can occur. But as per your history and age there are more possibilities of following causes:
1. Stress or Anxiety: Stress can cause this type of attacks. Do regular exercise and meditation to get rid from it.
2. Arteriosclerotic vascular disease: In this the blood supply to the brain reduces for few second and then recovers, causing these type of symptoms. Colour Doppler of both carotid arteries can rule out this.
3. Hypertension and other heart related issue: Pressure in head is major symptoms of hypertension. Keep a record of Blood pressure for 7 days and accordingly decision for further treatment can be planned. Sometimes at your age PSVT(Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia) can occur and a EKG at the time of episode or holter study is helpful to diagnose it.
4. Cervical spondylosis: Is you a student or in sitting job like computer work than there are chances of cervical spondylosis. A simple X-ray helps you to diagnose it.

My simple advice to you is that stop smoking and alcohol and do regular exercise for about 30-45 minutes per day. Consult your physician and do some required investigations to get to a diagnosis.
Hope you got your answer to the query. Write back if you have any further queries.

Hello and thanks again for follow up query
First of all thanks for the detail history. It seems that you problem is totally related to stress or anxiety. Actually there is nothing wrong with your heart or other systems but it is your mind which is thinking and creating problem. Consult your psychiatrist and get proper counselling and treatment.

Do regular exercise, yoga, meditation and relax your mind as much as you can. This will help you a lot.

As you left playing and doing exercise 6 years ago, so it will take some time to get back to that stamina. Fast heart rate during and after exercise is a normal phenomena and it occur with everyone. Do as much exercise as your body allows you. Do not compete with others.

In addition to this, smoking is major cause of arteriosclerotic disease and you are a smoker for 7 years. You have to rule out this by Color Doppler. My final advice to you is stop smoking.

Hope you got answer to all your queries. Write back if you have other queries. I will be happy to answer them.
Best Wishes and have a healthy life
