How Accurate Is A RNA HIV Test?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Jul 2016
Question: Hi,

I got the HIV RNA test yesterday and I am waiting for the results. Are the results reflective of both HIV 1 & 2 ? Would I need to go in for additional testing if the results are indicative of just one of the HIV's?
Also, what is the accuracy of the RNA test? I counted 20 - 22 days between my last sexual contact and the date I took the HIV RNA test. I am quite anxious. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Specific information

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
I would answer the exact questionsthat you have asked.
1. Most labs test for both HIV 1 and 2. So yes, I feel that it's included. However, all labs have their own protocol. So only your own lab cab really confirm this.
2. If you do tesy positive you will need to test for other tests like CD4 count. This would be necessary.
3. RNA tests are quite specific for HIV.
4. Anxiety prior to any test result is normal and expected. Use of protective devices and measures will help avoid such anxiety in future.
Best of luck.
