Posted on Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Question: Hi,
My son was diagnosed with bipolar 1 with psychosis in 2009. His doctor prescribed him renullti and Lamictol. He been taking this cocktail since Friday, 6/17. This week has been cursing out loud as if is fighting with someone and writing hostile messages on his journal. Does this mean the medication has not taken effect? if so how much time should we give it to find out if this cocktail is working for him.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Your son is displaying overt manic symptoms including active psychotic symptoms. The medications he has been prescribed (Rexulti and Lamictal) have not yet had enough time in his system to take effect. For someone in your son's current condition, the next step is to call 911 and visit an emergency room. He needs inpatient hospitalization for rapid and effective treatment for a current manic and psychotic episode.

Hi,
Thanks for your input. How long will it take for the medication to start working in his system? What if we just wait out for the medication to start working?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Detailed Answer:
It may take weeks for the medication to start working. This is not an adequate regimen for a patient with active psychosis. Your son needs immediate evaluation in an emergency room.
