Question: My mom was admitted into the hospital from a chronic facility due to dehydration, pneumonia and septic. She has a fistula in her lower bowel and has been on TPN for a year. While at the hospital she tested positive for gram positive rods. They placed her on a ventilator for a week due to the fact that they were worried she might go into respiratory failure. Her kidneys are not functioning like.they should. Her kidneys levels.arr at 4.3. They have taken her off sedation to see if she resound by commands. so far a few times but not many. Does it take time and if so how long for her kidneys to flush the sedation out so she can respond

Brief Answer:
Depends on sedation drugs&kidney function levels..

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I am sorry for the situation your mom is in.

Usually, it will take time for her to respond, depending on:
- sedative drug used
- kidney function levels

You should be happy that she is responding few times to commands although her kidneys are not working properly. That should take as a good sign. However, patience is required and not to push things.

Wish all the best!
