by maintaining fluid intake

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) in the body are maintained by equilibrium system of body which is regulated by brain and Kidneys.

Level of these elements is affected by dehydration, diarrhea, physical illness, kidney abnormality and drugs.

According to situation and deficiency level is corrected by intravenous fluid.

When Na level is very low intravenous normal saline is given and when K+ is low intravenous potassium chloride is given.

To maintain proper level in normal situation enough salt intake with fluids is an important aspect. Your doctor has suggested rightly.
