Can Bromopan Intake Induce Reddish Stools?

Dear Doctor, I have orange-reddish bits in my stools. I had been having pain for about three weeks (I m getting an endoscospy to check for gastritis or an ulcer) but my pain is now gone, my endocrinologist assured me it was nothing more than eating sausages or something red but they orange-reddish bits have returned. I have diarrhea but think this could be attributed to medication which includes Bromopan and Pantacol.

Hi,

The orange-reddish bits in the stool are more likely undigested food or food-coloring rather than bleeding. True blood in the stool usually looks more like coffee-colored streak, they are darker and sticky. If it is coming from higher up within the system, it will be bright red blood that tends to coat the stool or show up on the tissue. What you are describing seems more patchy and mixed in.

In terms of medicine, with the exception of perhaps discoloration, Bromopan and Pantacol are not associated with causing a red or orange color change in the stools. They can indeed cause loose stools or mild diarrhea in some individuals; thus, that part fits your experience. You sometimes see undigested bits of food looking reddish or orange when the stool moves quickly through the gut.

Since your pain has improved, and your endoscopy is already planned, that is the right next step. This will give a much clearer picture of whether there is gastritis or an ulcer. But based on what you are seeing, it doesn't sound like active bleeding.

I'd be worried more when you notice:
• Black, tar-like stool
• Fresh red blood mixed through the stool
• Worsening abdominal pain
• Dizziness
• Or weakness

Those would need an urgent check. Currently, the description would fit a pattern of fast transit diarrhea plus food pigment and is not dangerous. Still, be certain to bring this to the attention of the doctor performing your endoscopy, as they can check for any signs of bleeding just for completeness.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further query I will be happy to help. Wish you good health.
