I Have HSV2. I Have Not Had A Breakout In

Question: I have HSV2. I have not had a breakout in 5 years. If I'm for SURE not having a breakout and not shedding, is it still possible to transmit HSV2 from my saliva, semen, or pre-ejaculate or any secretions? Is it in secretions when there isn't a breakout or shedding?

Brief Answer:
Regarding HSV 2 transmission

Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

HSV 2 causes genital herpes. It spreads through intimate contact- genital or oral. The virus is present in secretions of the infected person. It is less likely to transmit if there have been no outbreaks recently but the risk is not zero as the virus can shed from time to time - intermittently even without outbreaks.

Hope I have answered your query.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer. So even when I know for a fact that I am not shedding or breaking out it will still be present in my secretions?

Hi,

Shedding does not happen all the time. It happens from time to time i.e intermittently, but yes, it may happen without you knowing.

Take care

I understand shedding. I know when I am shedding and when I am having a breakout. I'm asking you a specific question: If I am not having shedding or a breakout (i know when i am) meaning the viral load in my body is very low, will I have the virus in my secretions specifically?

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Shedding does not only happen during a breakout..! You can shed the virus even without a breakout (unknowingly) and yes, it would be there in the secretions though not always but rather intermittently(i.e on some days it might be there but most of the days it wont be there in secretions). That is when most people transmit it or get it from asymptomatic persons.
Take care. Let me know if you need any more assistance
