Is Pred Forte Eye Drops Recommended For Eye Injury?

Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: I was playing badminton and got hit in the eye yesterday morning. Washed it with cold water. One of my family member is a general doctor and he advised me to take Genticyn and Combiflam. The vision is fine and I don't seem to have any issue. But the eye is reddish when ever I put to eye drops.I am also having some pain in the eye when I close the eye lid. Today I have been to the Eye doctor for a check up. He examined and said that it is fine barring some minor inflammation. He has prescribed PRED FORTE eye drops (one drop 4 times daily for 7 days). Is it safe to use steroids. Can I continue with PRED FORTE.

Predforte can be used safely for 7 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to health care magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having trauma/ injury induced inflammationof the eye. This is usually a minor ininflammation and will resolve by 5-7 days.
The treatment is by use of steroid eye drops and antiinflammatory drugs.
Prednisolone acetate is a steroid eye drop and it can be used safely for short term like 1 week. Only long term continuous use of steroids should be avoided to prevent complications like steroid induced cataract and glaucoma.

Hence you can use prednisolone forte eye drops for 1 week.

Do get back to me for further questions.

Thank you

Thank you doctor. So can I discontinue using gentamycin eye drops?. Can I also take any tablets for the pain - like IMOL along with predforte.

Brief Answer:
You need to continue Gentamycin eye drop.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Gentamycin is a antibiotic and it is always better to take steroid eye drops like prednisolone with antibiotic eye drops. Hence you need to continue Gentamycin eye drop along with the prednisolone eye drop.
Combiflam is an pain killer and it contains ibuprofen and paracetamol, hence there is no need to take Imol along with Combiflam. Imol also contains paracetamol.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
