Is Typhoid Vaccination Safe To Take Prior To Travelling?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: I'm going to China in a few weeks. I had twinrix, polio, tetanus/diphtheria, and yellow fever injections August 2013 and yellow fever oral meds at the same time. I had a second hepatitis B injection October 2013. I believe I was also given a prescription for malaria pills before I went to XXXXXXX the end of October 2013. Are the injections still good? How long are those injections good as I may be traveling to Other countries later this year? and what other oral prescriptions would I need for my trip to China?

Brief Answer:
Vaccines recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.

The vaccines you will need, will depend on the destinations where you are going, so I can't tell what vaccines you will need for your trips to come.

For China, you are up to date for most of the vaccines.
If you have done 2 doses of Twinrix, then you have finished the courses of Hepatitis B and A.
But if you have done only one dose of Twinrix, then you will need to repeat the Hepatis B vaccine because in order to take effect you need 3 doses with difference 1 month and 6 month from each other. Hep A need to be 2 doses, with difference 6 months-1 year.

You may need the typhoid, if you haven't done it before. It is recommended for all travelers.
Also the same for Japanese encephalitis- you may need this vaccine if your trip will last more than a month, depending on where you are going in China and what time of year you are traveling. You should also consider this vaccine if you plan to visit rural areas in China or will be spending a lot of time outdoors, even for trips shorter than a month. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

Rabies vaccine is an option, if you think that its some risk of getting bites from dogs.

Yes, you should take the meds for Malaria with you and start as recommended.

Hope this is helpful.
