Is A Booster Dose Needed Every Time There Is An Exposure To Rabies? Any Diet Restrictions?
Question: Hi doctor, I just want to ask about rabies if a person exposed to rabies he need rabies treatment for each and every time I need booster dose and I have few more questions to ask.
1) is there any diet restriction for alcohol and food during rabies treatment
2) on my own experience I exposed to rabies virus before 5 months I received 3 doses on day 0,3,7 and exposed once again before two months and I received one more dose now again I exposed to rabies virus i should receive one more dose or my previous doses are good for me.
3) within one year I had received 7 to 8 doses of rabies vaccine this is good for any period of time or do I need routine booster for exposures

Rabies virus is present in the saliva of only rabid dogs and transmitted to humans only when bitten by the rabid dog. if you are bitten by the dog and the dog is not rabid then it does not mean that you are affected by the rabid dog.
now if you want to know whether the dog was rabid or not for this you have observe the for at least 02 weeks time. if the dog dies within 02 weeks then it means that dog was rabid but if it lives normally then the dog was not rabid.
2nd thing which i want you to know is if anyone get rabies then remember that the rabies has 100% mortality rate. which means once anyone affected by the rabies will never survive. it happens only when anyone really gets rabies virus in his blood.
whenever anyone is bitten by a dog, the first thing to do is wash the wound thoroughly and continuously with water as the virus absorbs the water to an extent that it bursts. second is to have the a tetanus vaccine as tetanus is a wound infection. then the dose for rabies vaccine is 0,3,7,14,28 and a booster dose at 90 days. this vaccine schedule works for 01 year. if you are bitten by a dog again then you have to repeat the dose if a duration of one year have passed

Thanks for your reply, now am telling the schedule of vaccination I have taken in one year I had nearly 7 to 8 shots before two months also I had one booster dose before two months so how long it good for me (not necessary for boosters to re exposures) thanks in advance

As you already had completed the schedule and also had the booster dose so its enough to produce the antibodies.which lasts for almost one year. However if a dog bites you again after one year then you need to repeat the vaccination from start but if you had no exposure to dogbite then you don't need any further doses

1)could you please tell me whether specific food or alcohol cause vaccine failure or i have to maintain special diet restrictions for rebies treatment.
2)as per your instructions you have mentioned 6 doses of rabies vaccine for one year protection from the future exposures but i had taken only 4 doses in the proper schedule that means 0,3,7,93 so this schedule also provide the same kind of protection
3) whether it is possible over doses of vaccine cause vaccine failure
4) and my last question it is possible rabies can transmit through air or non bite exposure why im asking this question i always use to travel lot in roads so i was afraid whether the rabid dog saliva comes in contact with eyes or mouth while crossing roads.
i expect the answers for all my questions so please help me on this and i thank you for the wonderfull service from you.

2. you have missed the doses 14 and 28. which means you had incomplete vaccination course which is not valid and you have to start over again.
3. no over doses of vaccine do not cause failure however low doses or incomplete doses causes failure
4. no it is not possible for rabies to transmit by any other way. as it only transmits in blood through wounds. and for transmission the dog must be rabid. normal pet dog do not cause rabies.

i have one more doubt on my second point, doses are missed because of my physician as told me on day 10 the dog is still alive so you no need of further vaccinations then i ask my physician about three doses what i have taken for that he told me it works as a Pre exposure schedule for my satisfaction i took one more booster on day 90. then also it may consider as incomplete vaccination or else its enough for the one year and also please advice the vaccination schedule for me as routinely exposed to rabies virus.

the latest research says that the dog should be keenly observed after the bite and if it is not found as a rabid dog and the bite is purely provoked then there is no need of vaccination except for having the tetanus vaccine but as you already having vaccination for a non rabid dog then you do not need to have further vaccination course. but if you had exposure to dog bite again in less or more than a year then get vaccination from the start according the schedule 0,3,7,14,28 and booster at 90 days.
with incomplete doses as you already there is development of weak immunity which is not able to defend against the powerful virus. therefore repeated doses of vaccines is necessary to produce adequate antibodies against the virus.

2) I just want to know the dog catchers in India exposed routinely to dog bites.so, they are in high risk any way its not possible to take vaccination all the time for his exposures

I told you that for provoked bites you don't even need to have vaccinations. and you do not need to get booster dose. what i suggest you was that if you are again exposed to dog bite and if you suspect the dog to be rabid then you must have the vaccination from start. if you have already taken 7-8 vaccination according to the schedule then you do not need to go for vaccination again.
2. Regarding the dog catchers exposed to bites have repeated vaccination annually and they are routinely screened for different diseases. some of them might get rabies but when we never now. but if they are exposed to bites then they are vaccinated which i told you works for almost one year although they have their safety measurement before catching dogs

1. Yes it is possible for person to get infected from dog saliva of rabid dog but only if that saliva comes in contact with blood through wound or some other means. Cannot sPread from eye or mouth contact
2. In my opinion you do not need to take booster dose as you are not having any rabies infection but if you want to have it by your own choice then you can have as much doses as much you want.
3. Provoked bite means you have invited the dog to bite you by teasing or some other way otherwise the dog was normal. It do not require vaccination.
