Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Helo,I got a stray dog bite ( not sure, but probably having rabies ) on August 04, 2011. I already took ARV as per the schedule i.e. 4th, 7th, 11th of August. I am suppose to take another one on 18th August. Please let me know how much dose should i take. Also is there any other type of vaccines which i must take to prevent any danger. I am 39 years of age. My weight is 62 Kgs.
Yes, a course of 4 scheduled doses of ARV, is effective to prevent Rabies. However, a course of RIG is also needed along with first dose of ARV in post exposure cases for immediate protection against Rabies. As, ARV will take about 14 days to produce effective level of antibodies. Till this time RIG will act as a safety dose of antibodies.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
