Is Alcohol Consumption Safe After A CT Scan With Oral And IV Contrast?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Dec 2015
Question: Hi Doctor, I had an abdominal and pelvic CT scan with both an oral contrast and IV contrast. 48 hours later, I drank a few beers. I would like to know if I put myself at risk for any damage in consuming alcohol (a few beers) 48 hours after having had the CT scan with oral and IV contrast or if it was okay and safe to do so.

Thanks very much

Brief Answer:
Safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It's ok to drink a few beers 48 hours after oral contrast. It is important that you were well hydrated before contrast and 24 hours later.
I usually check my patient's creatinine 3 days after contrast just to be sure. I recommend the same to you as well

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards

Hello Doctor,

Thank you very much for your reply. Does your response also apply to the IV contrast as well? Was it safe in regard to the IV contrast as well?

Also, as I had the CT scan three days ago, would it be okay if I have my creatine checked sometime next week or does it have to be checked around three days after contrast?

Thanks very much

Brief Answer:
Applicable to all iv contrast as well

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back. My response to you holds good for iv contrast as well. If you are having normal urine output like before then you need not worry about renal failure.
It is ok to get the creatinine checked next week but please make sure that you do it without forgetting about it

Regards
