default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I'm worried I'm having a miscarriage. I'm 6 weeks pregnant today, but I starting spotting a little (brown) and my back and stomach are cramping. My breasts are also less sore than they've been. Is this normal, or am I miscarrying?

Brief Answer:
Can be threatened abortion or ectopic pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The slight brown spotting that you are having can be due to a threatened abortion. Since you are having cramps in the back and stomach an ectopic pregnancy also needs to be ruled out. This can be due to incomplete attachment of the placenta to the uterine wall. To confirm this you can get your serum beta HCG levels evaluated. A rising titre will suggest a viable pregnancy.
I would also suggest you to get a TVS scan done to find out the yolk sac and fetal cardiac activity. This will also help in ruling out the ectopic pregnancy.
The decrease in the breast tenderness can be a normal variation and is not suggestive of a miscarriage.
You need to consult your gynecologist for the investigations and if the pregnancy is normal then get progesterone supplements prescribed to support the placenta.
Avoid any strenuous activity till then.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
