Question : I have had a cold for several days and now have a yucky cough. The outside of my throat is tender to the touch like someone hit me in it. Should I be concerned it is so etching serious or is it from the cough I've had the last few days

As per your clinical history it appears that you are having post nasal discharge leading to throat pain , itching & cough .

If I were your treating doctor, I would advice you
Steam Inhalation twice daily,
Antiseptic chlorhexidine Mouth Wash twice daily ,
Paracetamol for pain ,
Antihistaminic levocetirizine + Montelukast combination for cold , cough & itching &
Macrolide Antibiotic for infection .

You will need to see your doctor to get a prescription.
