Question: I have been prescribed .5 mg. lorazepam for extreme stress I am under. How many .5 lorazepam are safe on a daily basis? I take one at night for insomnia and sometimes another in the daytime. Would more than 2 be harmful?

Brief Answer:
Two 0.5 mg tablets of Lorazepam are safe to use

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

Lorazepam is a very safe drug and it has very high safety profile. Even doses of 10-20 times the normal dose are considered as safe, but should be used under proper prescription only. Normal dose in a healthy adult is about 2-4 mg per day though it depends upon clinical condition and clinician.

You are 86 years old and has been prescribed 0.5 mg dose which is a low and safe dose. If you have prescription of tablets then in my opinion no need to fear from doses of drug and 2 TABLETS PER DAY WOULD NOT CAUSE ANY HARM.

In my opinion 2-3 tablets per day will be safe for you but as the drug causes sedation it may increase risk of accidental fall so remain cautious while on this drug. Long term use of this drug is known to cause cognitive impairment in elderly and may worsen memory problems. So consult your doctor regularly while you are taking this drug.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Please feel free to ask again for more doubts.

Take care
