Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: My triglyceride level is 270. Vldl is 54. Ldl is 120; Cholesterol is 201. Do I need to take medication or can I make life style changes and reduce it? If medication is taken, can it be stopped after levels have reduced?

Brief Answer:
Start Life style changes / Add drugs later, if needed /

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic

HDL is good cholesterol – higher, the better.
LDL is bad cholesterol – lower, the better. In the absence of any other risk factor 100 is ideal for LDL-C. In the presence of heart disease and/or additional risk factors, 70 should be the aim. Your level is 120…

The level of Triglyceride is not alarming / Your level is 270 / Normal = less than 150 / Borderline = 150 to 199 / High = 200 to 499 / Very high = 500 or higher.

Keep your weight to normal / even a little less
Quit smoking, if you are a smoker
Do regular EXERCISE – say walking or jogging - 30 minutes a day / at least 5 days in a week.      Healthy FOOD is a must. Avoid saturated fats – coconut oil, palm oil, butter, ghee, full cream milk...Avoid junk foods in particular – French fries have palm oil / Pizza has cheese / XXXXXXX sweets are made in ghee.../ Change to Poly-un-saturated oil – like sun flower oil. / Include Mono-un-saturated oil – Olive oil.

Repeat the test in 6 to 8 weeks.

Cholesterol can still be high, in spite of diet and exercise – you need drugs; because it is also manufactured in the liver – and that is determined by heredity. Then, you will need drugs, Statin is the first choice. Some start it straight away – even with normal levels, even without problems (Primary Prophylaxis)

Most likely, you will need drugs
The drugs have to be taken for life – for a long life, one needs lifelong drugs…

Good luck
God bless you

thanks for your reply doctor. the local doctor (MD) here prescribed Rosave F5 for three months to reduce cholesterol levels. With the levels I have indicated, should I take it or practise lifestyle changes and check after 3 months? Also, can such medicines be stopped once you start taking them? wanted an expert opinion before i started such medication. kindly reply.

Brief Answer:
Good drug / may be stopped

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The medicine belongs to the class of statins / without doubt, it is a good one
Start both simultaneously / check the levels after 3 months / modify the dose depending on the outcome
Of course, it can be stopped / but it needs very very strict life style, which is extremely difficult to sustain… Also, the drugs has good effects beyond cholesterol, like stabilisation of plaque, anti-oxidant etc… So, many people are taking with normal levels! (Primary prophylaxis)!!
The wise option is to take for ever…
