Is Upper Endoscopy Advisable While Having Chronic Bleeding In The Nasal Passage?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: My husband, aged 62, is scheduled for an upper endoscopy. He apparently did not disclose his history of chronic bleeding to his nasal passages (once cauterized)..
This procedure appears unsafe to me, given his age and condition. Can you counsel him to elect to stop it?

Please note that my husband still has the chronic bleeding problem! Who would let this proceed?

This same gentleman, my husband, also already had open-heart surgery. Can you help us?

Brief Answer:
Should be okay for upper endoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.
If his bleeding is only in the nasal passages, upper endoscopy should not be a problem.
Upper endoscopy is done through the mouth, not the nose.
If he underwent open heart surgery and did not undergo bleeding complications then he should be able to tolerate the upper endoscopy with problems.
However, he should let his doctors know about this problem so that they are aware of it before they do any procedure.

Dr. Robinson
