Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: Hi my husband has been using Parnate for 30 years, with great success, it changed his life. Unfortunately all of a sudden, we can not find it anywhere in South Africa! It seems to be discontinued completely...... we are so desperate. Is there any way we can import from elsewhere with the help of his medical practitioner? Please help!

Brief Answer:
Look for other non-selective MAOIs drugs...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

Parnate contains the active ingredients called tranylcypromine. It is part of the class of non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI), non-hydrazine group.

If tranylcypromine cannot be found in your country, you can look for other non-selective MAOI drugs under hydrazine group such as:

- Isocarboxazid (Marplan)
- Isoniazid (Laniazid, Nydrazid)
- Nialamide (Niamid)
- Phenelzine (Nardil, Nardelzine)

You can discuss with his psychiatrist if other drug groups of MAOI can be prescribed for your husband.

All the best!
