Suggest Medication For Mild Cognitive Impairment

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Question: I have received a diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment from Noran clinic last spring
and am taking 10 mg of Memantine tablets twice a day since February 2016. (Previously I
was given Donepezil 5 mg for a week which I could not tolerlate). I have the Mayo Clinic Alzeimer's
Disease book which I have read thoroughly. My question, is there any other drug available to help my issues in place of the current of the one I am taking?

Thank you. XXXXXXX XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for your question.

There are only two approved drugs for use in mild cognitive impairment -- memantine and donepezil. I wish there were more, but unfortunately at this time we are limited to just these two. It sounds like you couldn't tolerate donepezil, which is indeed sometimes difficult to tolerate. So right now you are doing everything you can to treat this condition by taking memantine. There is nothing else you need to do!
