Suggest Remedies For Muscle Cramps In Legs Caused By MS

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Mar 2016
Question: I have Multiple Sclerosis since 1985 - now secondary progressive. I have been experiencing extreme extensors in both legs which impedes movement even with a standing aid (because the legs are strongly extended) and difficult if not impossible to bend at the knee. Are there any known medical supplements which can ease the tension during an acute episode?

Brief Answer:
Natural muscle relaxants

Detailed Answer:
Good evening and thank you very much for your question on the use of medical supplements to aid in muscle relaxation in the legs which are cramped extensively by MS. None of the following claimed muscle relaxants which are NON-prescription and come from natural sources is studied or approved by the FDA for muscle relaxation but some people do report relief.

I will simply name the ones I know and have recommended in some patients who either cannot take prescription choices due to side effects or prefer not to use Big Pharma products. They are:

1. Arnica
2. Magnesium
3. Kava Kava
4. Chamomile
5. Valerian
6. Glucosamine sulfate
7. Vitamin D (when patient is deficient)

There are likely others but these are thought to have direct effects on the central nervous system. Their side effects are especially low although there are some drug to drug interactions which should be checked no matter how safe your doctor says things will be.

Having provided you with the list I have to also add that the likelihood that any of these remedies will turn your excessive EXTENSOR LOAD to your legs completely around over the course of a few days I think is less than 50/50.

I hope this addresses your concerns and that you'll keep me in mind for future questions regarding these or other neurological/medical issues I may be able to help answer. Feel free to upload more specific information regarding lab tests and diagnostic studies which have been done and I'll be happy to look at them.

I'd appreciate your rating this interaction with a HIGH STAR SCORE if you found the information useful and would be grateful for a few words of feedback. I'd also appreciate your CLOSING THIS QUERY as well if you are satisfied with the responses I've provided.
