Question: Hello. I noticed yesterday morning a small bruised shaped like a line on my calve, it seems to have gotten bigger. Blood clot? Didn't hit anything. Pic attached. Bit concerned. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
contusion or bruise

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your picture clearly shows a superficial bruise. Despite you not having had any trauma that you remember there is some type of injury here. The bruise actually looks old. Did you injury yourself anywhere higher up on the leg? if you were injuried higher up then a deep bruise would gradually be pulled down by gravity until you see it on the back of your leg. Also if you are taking aspirin you can cause a bleeding from minor trauma. This is not a blood clot and is nothing to be overly concerned about. The bruise will be absorbed in the next week days and no longer bother you.

In summary
1. Contusion
2. Old injury
3. Stop ASA if taking
4. Self limiting and will resolve on its own
5. This is not a blood clot.
6. No risk or danger here

Could exercising the legs, such as riding a bike a lot cause this? I really do not recall having any injury to my leg recently though, that's the issue. Could it be a broken vessel? So you say it will fade away, okay. Now if it does get worse, then what? Thanks for the answer.

Brief Answer:
bruise from bicyclining

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning to HCM with your response

Yes the bruise is caused from a small broken blood vessel and since you mention that you rise bicycle that is the probable source of the broken blood vessel. The small seats from a bicycle and the small area that you sit on put tremendous amount of pressure on your buttock muscles. Just by having one bump that could have caused enough trauma to cause a bruise. You may say then how come the bruise is so low on my calf? That is because the blood is beneath the skin and gravity will pool the blood down lower in the leg until it shows up lower on your calf.

The other possibility is just from the excessive upper leg motion from bicycling you may ruptured or pulled a muscle deep in your leg. You may not have noticed it and been very minor but it did cause bleeding and hence the bruise seen later.

This will not get any worse. the color of the bruise tells me that this happened 3-5 days ago. Your body will absorb the bruise and there will be no residual damage.

Okay, so it should go away soon, great. I have a last question, what would a deep vein blood clot look like or feel like?

Brief Answer:
DVT signs and symptoms

Detailed Answer:
A deep venous thrombosis or DVT is also called a blood clot. The blood clot is located inside a blood vessel deep inside the leg. It usually occurs after sitting in an airplane for a long period of time. This causes the blood to pool in the lower legs and cause thrombosis. The first symptom would be swelling and redness of the lower leg. Sometimes the clotted vein can be felt in the back of the lower leg
