Suggest Remedy For Eye Pain And Pressure In Head While Treating Multiple Sclerosis

Posted on Sat, 9 Jan 2016
Question: I have MS and in XXXXXXX received the new Lemtrada treatment. I went in a couple weeks ago and my brain looks the same no changes except some abnormalities on my left part of my skull. The xray and CT came back normal. I went to my regular eye exam and was getting my eyes dilated and my left eye came completely out of the socket. The doctor had to put it back in. My left side of my head had been having some pressure and pain. My MS neurologist will be referring me to another specialist. What could be happening. The eye doctor said my thyroid needs to be checked and we are waiting for the results from that as well. What could this possibly be?

Brief Answer:
Probably hyperactive thyroid gland function.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First I need to ask you about the thyroid gland function, it has been checked before use of LemtrAda?

Eye swelling could be related to conditions such hyperactive thyroid gland.

In the other hand, Lemtrada use could cause side effects such thyroid gland dysfunction ( hypo or hyperactive thyroid ), among others.

So, in my opinion, eye swelling is most likely related to hyperthyroidism and agree with your Doctor's recommendation to check thyroid function.

If there was a check up of thyroid gland function before use of Lemtrada and it was within normal ranges, Lemtrada could be the culprit of your new concerns.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Greetings.

Hello,
Thank you for your response. Before taking Lemtrada they did take my thyroid and it was checked about three months ago again. Hopefully the blood results will shed some light.

Before the Lemtrada I had to see an ophthalmologist. I will try and see if I can get in tomorrow.

Do you think there is any possible relation to the MRI abnormalty in the brain. I saw the MRI images with my doctor and how they compared it to my last MRI. It is on the skull and comes up dark and not smooth like the outer side of the rest of the skull. My doctor even used the word like bubbles on the left upper part of my skull.
What would show up on a mRI and not the xray or ct?

So I have my left eye that just completely came out, head pressure on left side right where the abnormality is, and my regular MS symptoms that might be relate to something else like my ear pain on the left side.

If my MS neurologist was to refer me like she said, which specialist would I be referred to?

Thanks so much for you professional input.

Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

MRI imaging is superior to CT scan in showing with accuracy soft tissue structure and pathological changes of soft tissue instead of bones.

In your case, MRI could show swelling of the soft tissue behind the eye pushing it, but, I need to see images by myself, in order to be more accurate.

If you could upload some of the MRI images, I'll be happy to examine them.

Ear pain could be a symptom of multiple sclerosis, but, can also arise from ear disease such infections etc. so, it should be checked out by your Doctor.

I think the reference should be to a Endocrinologist to evaluate further the thyroid gland function.

Hope I helped you.

Take care.

Hello,
My thyroid testing all came back normal. I go to the eye specialist on Monday. I know I have optic neuritis on my left eye from my MS but besides that is there another common reason for eye just coming out?
My MS neurologist is waiting to actually look at the images for the CT. I will get this to her tomorrow and I have requested images of my MRI so I can have you take a peak as well.
Really frustrating that nothing is coming up conclusive as to what is going on.
I am also seeing a new primary on Thurs. to see if they have any ideas as well.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Eye coming out of socket ( exophthalmos ) is not a common condition.

Besides Graves' disease ( or hyperactive thyroid gland ) that is excluded now by thyroid function tests, other causes of eye coming out include orbital cellulitis (inflamation of orbital fat), orbital pseudotumor, Meningioma, carotido-cavernous fistula, dermoid cyst etc.

Reviewing the MRI should give more information about the correct cause.

If you will upload images of MRI/CT scan, I remain at your disposal to examine them and give my opinion.

Best regards.

Hello,
I just uploaded the results of the CT. I had to go to the hospital to get the disk to give to the MS neurologist tomorrow. I hope to get the MRI from a couple weeks ago and the one from last year. What's the best way to get this to you because there are a lot of images on the disk and not quite sure how to upload them because it isn't in the format that the site requests like a pdf?
I really appreciate all of your input because right now, you are giving me the most information compared to any of my doctors at this point.

The eye doctor that I saw when my eye came out said it might happen again and not to touch my eye too much, etc. That is really scary to even think about. I really want to find out the reason and appreciate your care with answering my questions so far.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Hello again XXXXXXX

You can copy and paste the DICOM contents of the disc as a file in your desktop.

After that you can upload the file with DICOM images at google drive eg. and send the link through this page to me.

Or, you can take screenshots of the CT scan and MRI and, after that you can post the pictures directly to this page.

Awaiting ...

Hello again,
I gave my husband the instructions for the images. He is working on that now for me. I have also just attached the MRI reports from my most recent scan this month and my scan from 2014 for comparison.
Thanks again, XXXXXXX
