Question : My 81 year old father was eating last night and developed discomfort and has been spitting up mucous since last night. He cannot sleep and only feels better sitting up. He does take GERD medication. What could be the cause. This has happened about 6 times over the last 2 years.

Hi and welcome to HCM.
In this case i suggest to do gastroscopy as soon as possible. It can be worsneing of gerd but also some other esophageal or stomach disorder such as ulcer, hiatal hernia, tumor or stomach motility disorder. Till that he should avoid meal 3 hours prior to sleep. Avoid spicy food, coffee, alcohol and carbonated rinks. Avoid long sitting after meal and overeating. He should drink menta tea and milk products. He should sleep with elevated upper body.
