Question: Hi. I am contemplating doing a M.B.S.R. course. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ,whom you may know of,pioneered a form of mindfulness that has received a great amount of attention in mainstream medicine in your country...or so I believe.I have had about six or seven serious bouts of crippling anxiety and depression some of which I would consider were life threatening.I am male, 63 years old,on dialysis,and have been interested in various forms of meditation.While I have had some success ,M.B.S.R.comes highly recommended for depression. I have been taking an M.O.A.I. antidepressant for over twenty years but breakthroughs do occur every few years with stressful life events. My wife and I lost both our children to a rare mitochondrial disorder which has meant our relationship has come through some of the toughest trials imaginable. We are not financially secure, and I don't work.This is proving to be another trigger. M.B.S.R. comes with a few warnings in the fine print about anxiety and depression. I would like to know if any one has had clinical experience with this kind of scenario or has even some anecdotal evidence as to the efficacy this form of treatment for serious depressive illness .

I will tell you about meditation and yoga in general.

Meditation can be of many types according to the school of thought. I personally follow the art of living. And it has worked for me (I have been through my package of anxieties and stresses). I was an emotionally weak person before meditation. I resorted to meditation before I took antidepressants. That was two years ago and till date I have NOT needed anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medicines. In art of living I have seen many other people fighting their stresses and depressions with meditation and yoga. So this was my experience.

I have read the website on MBSR. It seems very similar to the meditation that I have been doing. If you learn to live in the present moment, you will be in bliss. It is better done under guidance of a XXXXXXX or a teacher. You can do it along with your religious beliefs. And I am sure it will work for you.
