Suggest Treatment For Asthma

Question: Hello,
I have a 13 year old daughter who has asthma. In the past 10 months she has had bronchitis 5 times and Strep once. When she becomes ill, it usually takes two rounds of antibiotics and two rounds of steroids. Her cough continues for about 2 weeks after the onset of illness. She did start receiving allergy shots about 2 months ago and always receives a flu shot in September every year. My concern is that there might be something else going on. It just does not seem normal for a child to be sick all the time. Please advise. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, Myself Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar. I am practising Pulmonologist in XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX I like to know which asthama medicines she is taking. I mean which inhaler medicines? And is she vaccinated for pneumococci? The treatment of recurrent asthma exacerbation is
1. Is it asthma or something else?
2. Is she taking inhalers regularly and properly.
3. Is she protected from allergens?
4. What about IgE level?
Asthma needs step wise approach.
Identify the allergens like pollens, dust, mite dust etc and try to remove completely.
If you have pets at home, this can be a triggering factor.
Vaccination with pneumoccoccal and influenza is needed.
Measure S. Ig E level. If raised you can start anti IgE therapy (monoclonal antibody). It is a newer therapy and proven to decrease the exacerbation rate.
So discuss these things with your treating pediatrician.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good heakth for your daughter. Thsnks.
