Suggest Treatment For Bacterial Vaginosis
Question: 4 years ago, i had an affair. I have been 100% faithful since then but my wife recently tested positive for bacterial vaginosis. she does not use douches, no recent sexual contacts besides myself. i can understand her anxiety that i have been unfaithful. I know that the CDC doesn't classify BV as an STD but can you explain why it is not considered an STD and how it is possible for her to have BV [no other obvious risk factors]
Brief Answer:
Infestation and not infection
Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I understand your anxiety about it.
It is not an infection and just an infestation like lice which stays in hair but doesn't penetrate scalp but in dandruff the epidermal layer of scalp is affected and thus shed off.
So not classified in STDs.
It can be got from various sources like poor hygiene of toilet seats in public places and even water sources so she should not be thinking otherwise.
I hope the discussion is helpful.

Thank you. Do you ever treat this with antibiotics? Do you know why the CDC recommends antibiotic treatment for symptomatic female patients if it isn't an infection?
Brief Answer:
Always treated
Detailed Answer:
Yes antibiotic is necessary and I give it to all my patients because the itching and irritation resulting from this can cause scratching feeling which can lead to superadded infection.
Also excessive discharge can be a good breading ground for many bacteria.
