Suggest Treatment For Bone Fracture On Ring Finger

default
Posted on Tue, 12 May 2015
Question: I injured my right ring finger (first joint tendon) No swelling upon x ray and no broken bones. The first
part of this finger just won't stay erect. Upon diagnosis this Physician Assistant at Urgent care said no splint just watch it for a week. 800MG of IB Proven and hot moist heat. My finger tonight was turning inward and was feeling very uncomfortable. So I bought a splint a the drug store and it feels better. Monday I will see my primary care Physician. Will the splint hurt my finger for one day?

Brief Answer:
Splint is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query.

You may not have a bone fracture but it is quite possible that you have a rupture of the tendon. For rupture (whether partial or complete), you will need splint day and night for atleast 3-4 weeks. Later the splint will be needed for daytime for atleast 4 more weeks.

In western countries occupational therapists make these splints that are just right for the finger and are comfortable too. You may contact one such therapist through your doctor or personally at a hospital or clinic etc.

It is good that you started the splint. You have to start wearing it right away and do not take it off for any reason even while bathing or sleeping etc. We want the finger to straighten up. If the splint is not worn properly the finger will heal in the bent position.

Hope it helps.
