Question: My 2 week and a half week old infant is really suddrnly struggling to settle after feeds, very windy, fussy at the breast. Wants to nurse all the timebut really only for the comfort. She hasnt had a dirty nappy for 2 days and i can she her discomfort after feeding. She wont be put in her crib on her back or in the pram now. In order to get any sleep im having to hold her. This is steadily getting worse at each feed. I can hear her stomache churning and her face distorts as if concentrating on the pain. Occasionally she brings up the milk, particularly if i lie her down. What can you suggest?

Brief Answer:
It is borborygmi

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting on Health care Magic. By what you quote I think what your newborn is having is Borborygmi. It happens usually in infants when they consume milk fast along with air due to vigorous sucking. The air which has gone into the digestive system has to come out either as belching or flatus. Till it comes out they will show some signs of discomfort. The best solution for it is burping the baby after every feed so that during burping and tapping at the back in upright position the excess air in the stomach comes out. The other option is putting in the baby in prone position with buttocks in an elevated position and slightly tapping at the back and the flatus gets released. If with these maneuvers, the baby's discomfort is not settling, I suggest you consult your Pediatrician. I advice you not to use any medicines like Dicyclomine which is available as over the counter medicine in many countries. It provides only temporary relief.
2nd thing which comes to my mind is an otitis media, but highly unlikely as there is no fever or signs of upper respiratory system like cold.

Brief Answer:
Need some history please

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the trust in me.
If you do burp her and still she is having the same problem and with your note that she has not passed stools for the past 2 days, I suggest that could be the reason for her discomfort. But at the same time, baby of this age should not receive any medicine to make her pass stools.
Meanwhile kindly get back to me with the following please -
1. Is there any rash or skin excoriation over the buttock area?
2. have you fed her any other milk other than breast milk?
3. Is there any family history of eczema or allergy or atopy or cow's milk protein allergy?
Hope my answer was helpful for you. Happy to help. Please get back if there are any further queries.

Brief Answer:
Could be a cow's milk protein allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi.. Thank you for getting back soon. With a family history of allergy, I would consider a possibility of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). I suggest you go off all cow's milk products including biscuits and chocolates. If you see a difference in 24-48 hours in her, it is a telltale sign of CMPA.

Give your baby only breast feeds and nothing else, not even water. Hopefully she will get better. But I would like to assure you one thing. If the baby is gaining weight well and not having diarrhea and voiding appropriately, you can be rest assured.

I also strongly feel that once she passes motion, she will be more comfortable. Please get back if you have any further doubts.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. Happy to help. Please get back if there are any further queries.
