Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: i am concerned with a burning/stingin sensation like sunburn under the skin in chest, back,in arm pit, down side,....i am concerned because i had that feeling when my aortic valve was failing, but i had other problems i dont have now, i am on nexium now because when the doctor told me i was in afib i told him also about a increase in belching and a pain like a poker pushing below sternum, and sometimes under ribs, when i had ekg in office all he talked about was the afib, my b/p is normal, when valve failed it was as high as 190/100 and i was tachycardic but not now.....i thought the underarm stingin was due to reaction to deodorant...still havin it, and all these symptoms can vary day to day and even hour to hour....it's driving me crazy...

Brief Answer:
Gastric condition vs atrial fibrillation; need to confirm cause first

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. In my opinion there could be two possible causes for your presentation sir, and they are:

+Gastric condition: There are various gastric conditions that can at times mimic cardiac symptoms. Some conditions include gastritis, hyperacidity, acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, etc. Symptoms of these conditions include:

-Heartburn: Which is a burning sensation predominantly in the central region of the chest behind the sternum
-Abdominal bloating
-Radiation of pain around the chest region
-Increase belching
-Change in appetite
and a few others.

Some main causes or triggering factors for the aggravation of all such conditions includes stress, smoking, anxiety, alcohol use, food (spicy, oily, fatty, fried, etc.), certain medications, overeating, long gaps between meals, rigorous exercise, etc.

In my opinion your symptoms match a gastric condition more than atrial fibrillation. But as you have been trying to follow all possible precautions to avoid gastric irritation and also have been on nexium which helps reduce acid production in your stomach, then either the taken measures are not sufficient enough or your symptoms could be related to the atrial fibrillation

At the same time, ruling out other causes with the help of a 24-hour pH monitoring and an upper GI endoscopy, may also help.

+Atrial fibrillation along with some other factors: The symptoms of atrial fibrillation do also include chest pain, palpitations, uncomfortable feeling in chest, etc; but no burning sensation as such. But as you said, the burning sensation could also be due to the deodorant used.

So it will be important to rule out one factor and confirm the other one to be the cause. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
