Question: I think I have a cold but have a lot of thick green/brown mucus coming up. I am a diabetic, have CKD and Graves disease. Just wondering if I need an antibiotic, have only had this for 3 days.

I would wait bit more

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.
In most cases any respiratory infection starts as viral one and if bacterial infections occur,it happens usually after 5 days of cold. Of course, there are exceptions, but in every cases it is always recommended to avoid antibiotic until signs of bacterial infection occur and these include fever, chills, productive cough, increasing chest and throat pain. Green/brown mucus can be sign of bacterial pharingitis or pneumonia but also it is seen in any respiratory infection. Also, since you have CKD,it is advisable to avoid antibiotc as much as possible since many of these worsen kidney function.
SO I suggest to take viamin C, lot of fluids and treat yourself as any other cold for next 2 days. if any of these symptoms occur that I ve mentioned or there is progression of mucus production, if it become yellow or bloody, then you should see doctor. WIsh you good health. Regards
