Brief Answer:
symptomatic treatment may be enough

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome to healthcaremagic,

Upper respiratory tract infections are frequently viral in nature, hence only symptomatic treatment will suffice.

For the running nose you will need an antihistamine and for the cough you will need a central cough suppressant. Please get the necessary prescriptions from your doctor.

If the symptoms do not clear in 5 days then an antibiotic may become necessary. I personally prefer antibiotics of the penicillin group. They work very well for the infections of the upper respiratory tract. Since you have already started the antibiotics, do not stop them, please take the entire course.

you should also follow some general measures like-
1)Do warm salt water gargling 4 times daily.
2) drink plenty of warm fluids.
3) Avoid air conditioning and cold foods.
4) Get plenty of rest.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi.
