Suggest Treatment For Depression While On Hydroxyzine

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: My son is 28 years old and is suffering from depression. He lives in XXXXXXX and calls me every day in tears saying that he can't do the simplest of tasks. he hates his job, he says he has no friends, he can't hold down a relationship and he's not eating or sleeping properly. He was recently put on Lexapram and Hydroxyzine. He's only been on these meds for a week. I am at a loss of how to help him. I'm afraid he will do something to himself if I can't get him help. i tell him to call doctors but he doesn't do it - says it's too overwhelming. what do i do?

Hello, and thanks for your question.

It takes up to 4 weeks for Lexapram to have significant antidepressant effects. The hydroxyzine is for anxiety only. If your son is suffering this much, and if you are concerned he might harm himself, you need to call emergency services. He likely needs inpatient psychiatric treatment, rather than outpatient treatment which clearly isn't doing enough for him.

Thank you. I actually went on ZocDoc and found a Psychiatrist that can see him this week. Is that your recommendation?

This may be sufficient, but if you are as you say seriously concerned he might harm himself, you need to call emergency services to have him evaluated immediately.

Perfect, thank you. I have talked with him and feel that he's not in any immediate danger of hurting himself and I will see him on Saturday as I will be traveling to him. I believe that if I can get him in to talk to someone it will help keep him focused. He is at work and appears to be having a good day today.
