Question: I have been experiencing severe anxiety and nervousness and feeling sad all of the time crying. My eyes are red sometimes for no reason and it feels like a lot of pressure behind them. I have insomnia from time to time and I tremble. I know that both my father and aunt were diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. Should I have my doctor test my thyroid functions?

test thyroid and do see a psychiatrist also

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I can understnd your situation as the symptoms are really bothering you right now. But please hev trust, you will get well soon.

There will be few main things which I think that you must do..

1. Definitely, get your thyroid function test- including : TSH, T3 and T4 levels.

2. If the above is found disturbed- see a physician or an endocrinologist and start medicine.

3. As your symptoms do mimic depressive and anxiety disorder ( tearfullness, heaviness behind eyes can be due to heaviness in head and insomnia and anxiety) you should also make a vistit to a psychiatrists and discuss the symptoms in detail. Prompt diagnosis and correct managment is very helpful in treating psychological disorders.

4. In more than half cases of anxiety and depression- pt. also have comorbid thyroid disorders. So, we must look into both aspects and take a wholesome approach.

5. There is a possibility that you may be asked for vision test in order to see if there is any deminished power in eye sight : which may be giving heaviness and pressure behind the eyes.

6. Try not to be alone and share your feelings with some good and understanding friend or close relative. Sharing is helpful...

I hope the reply helps you.
Please feel free to ask more queries for clarification.

Wish you speedy recovery!
