Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: last month I got a dog bite (30 mar 2014), and took rabipur 5 doses as per the local doctor suggestion, so far the dog is not dead, do I need to still monitor the dog condition? any further treatment required incase dog dies? i.e. am I completely safe from rabies now?

Brief Answer:
No need to monitor.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity answer your query.

I am glad that you have been getting the vaccination done proactively.I were to watch the dog for 10 days for development of rabid signs. If the dog survives beyond this and is normal chances of getting infection in the future is almost negligible.
Since the risk of developing rabies after a bite by a rabid animal varies with the site and severity of the wound I would like to know some more information-
Is it a stray dog?
If no, do you have any idea of vaccination status?
What was the type of wound - deep or superficial?
Did blood ooze after the bite?
How was the wound/bite managed?
Awaiting your reply.Thank you.

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you for your reply. Please see the below answers:

Is it a stray dog? No it is domestic dog, breed one (german sheprd if guess correctly)

If no, do you have any idea of vaccination status? As owner said they have done the proper vaccination, but couldn't get more info as he is not cooperative and kind of rude. When I look from out side of the building the dog looked fine till yesterday. But I couldn't get more detailed info about its current behaviour.

What was the type of wound - deep or superficial? It is a kind of two scratches on the side of my hip, not deep.

Did blood ooze after the bite? Slightly blood appeared, but no bleeding.

How was the wound/bite managed? Straight away went to near by hospital and took two injections (dt, rabipur) and reached my home after an hour and took a bath, no specific treatment was done on the wound.

Last time when I took my last dose the servant told I may have to keep track of the dog as this rabipur can't guarantee 100%, further treatment may be needed; so I got confused how to proceed further, Please advise the correct method that I should follow.

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Need not track the dog

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.Thanks for writing back.

I am glad that you gave detailed answers to all of my questions .

Since its a domestic dog which was already vaccinated and the scratch was not deep with no bleeding from the local site chances of infection is almost nil and highly unlikely.Suggest not to panic and dismiss the comments by the servant.

You need not track the dog since it has already been vaccinated and chances of acquiring the infection by the dog is none.

Hope this answers your query.
