Question : I've been feeling like I have something stuck in my throat for the past 2 months now and it's starting to worry me. I've had moments while eating where I go to swallow food and it feels like it's going to get stuck. Sometimes for a brief moment, food actually does get stuck. For those seconds, though I try to remain calm, I panic. Even when I'm not eating, attempting to clear my throat by swallowing is awkward. Most of the time I can swallow just fine despite the feeling in my throat. At one point last week though, I tried clearing my throat only to have it blocked for a split second by my own saliva and had to open my mouth to take in air. It worries me the most when I'm getting into bed and I feel like something's still stuck in my throat. Thinking that I could possibly not wake up the next day because of this makes me nervous...I just wish I knew what this was. I'm a 25 year old male and I don't know what this is. Can you help me?

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The most common reasons for such a sensation while swallowing are reflux, allergies, lymphoid tissue hypertrophy, post nasal drip and dryness in the throat.

2. At your age, nothing major is expected.

3. A simple endoscopic examination such as a videolaryngoscopy should be done. Upload the images or video here.

4. FEES (Fibroptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing ) and FEESST (Fibroptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing ) are newer swallowing tests.

5. Start with anti reflux and anti-allergy treatment. Medicated gargles will help.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
