Question: My daughter broke the growth plate in her ankle 5 yrs ago. six months ago she start having some issue with it such as when it would rain or exteremly cold it would hurt. Over the course of the six month period her ankle has start popping. Now when she stands or walks any distanct she feels like her ankle "is going to give away on her". I have wrapped the ankle with an ace bandage. In addition with the ace bandage she is wear an ankle support brace. She is 16. Can you provide any insight to this problem? Brief Answer:
might be a malunited fracture, ligament or tendon injury

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
First of all, growth plate or epiphyseal injury should be taken care of seriously. If required, fixation should also be done. Otherwise when the fracture heals, the alignment is not maintained and malunion can occur. Also, ankle has many ligaments and tendons. So injury to any of them leading to laxity and inflammation is also possible.
If a patient comes to me with such complaints, i would go for an urgent XRay which can reveal bony pattern of the ankle and any probable malunion. Also clinical examination for tendon, ligament and soft tissue injury would be done. An MRI scan may be also required.
So i would suggest a thorough orthopedic examination with an Xray and if possible, MRI scan of the ankle. You can consult me with the reports. For now you can apply brace, avoid excess movement or walking and give painkillers till orthopedic consultation.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards.
