Possibility of AGA, Need more information
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic
I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query. I would like to gather some more information from you in order to be able to help you better.
--Do you suffer from dandruff/scalp scaling?
--Do you have a history of medical illness or any other major stressful event within the past 3-6 months? Jaundice suffered 3 years back is unlikely to be a cause for such a chronic hair fall problem.
--Is there a history of androgenetic alopecia/hereditary hair loss, in your first cousins and there family members(both maternal or paternal side)?
--Can you upload a picture depicting the pattern and severity of your hair loss?(front view and side view)
--Can you brief me about the hair solution that you have been using?
Hair loss can be of various types in males:
1. Androgenetic alopecia(AGA)
2. Telogen effluvium (Post stress i.e medical illness like typhoid, malaria, dengue; Post-surgical; psychological stress)
3. Alopecia areata
4. Secondary to various disease of the scalp like seborrheic dermatitis, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus.
Androgenetic alopecia(AGA) is the commonest type of hair loss in males. By the age of 30 almost 30% of males have this kind of hair loss and by the age of 50 almost 50% of males have this kind of hair loss.
Thinning and receding hair line in males is classical of Male pattern Androgenetic Alopecia (MAGA) also simply known as Androgenetic alopecia. Scalp hairs are genetically programmed for progressive thinning under the influence of hormones (Testosterone). Although family history is positive in most but it is not a prerequisite for immediate family members (father and brother) to be affected with this type of hair loss. Affected family members on the maternal or paternal side(cousins) also suggest that there is a hereditary component.
Hair loss has a pattern to it in these kinds of hair loss e.g Teens usually have some Temporal recession which is then followed by deepening of Temporal recession (the earliest stage of Male Hair Loss) leading further to early hair loss in the crown (vertex) and later to further frontal hair loss and enlargement of vertex and so on... By this time people usually become concerned about their receding hair line.
Treatment modalities include Topical Minoxodil 5%(Mintop Forte) and oral finasteride. There are well controlled trials and US FDA approval for them for this kind of hair loss in males.
Treatment of Male pattern hair loss is long term but gives good results if started at an early stage so that hair loss is not allowed to progress any further (any new hair that grows with this therapy is complementary). Therefore it is imperative that you begin therapy as soon as possible so that your hair fall can be arrested before its too late.
I am here to help you with any further clarifications
regards

AGA
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Judging from the prescription, you seem to suffer from Androgenetic alopecia. As I mentioned previously, Hair loss has a pattern to it in these kinds of hair loss e.g Teens usually have some Temporal recession which is then followed by deepening of Temporal recession (the earliest stage of Male Hair Loss) leading further to early hair loss in the crown (vertex) and later to further frontal hair loss and enlargement of vertex and so on.
However apart from minoxidil you should also be taking oral finasteride. Treatment modalities for AGA include Topical Minoxodil 5%(Mintop Forte) and oral finasteride.
While minoxidil is a non-specific hair growth promoter, Finasteride is specific for AGA. It inhibits the enzyme 5 alpha reductase (mainly responsible for hair thinning) which is present in the hair follicle outer root sheath.
I would suggest that you use a ketoconazole based antidandruff shampoo e.g Nizral 2% shampoo, is 2% ketoconazole marketed by johnsons and johnsons in India.
