Suggest Treatment For Heavy Bleeding When On Qlara

Question : Hi my daughter was suffering with heavy periods aged 13 and was put on Qlara which did not help and she bled continually and bleeding was worse. She was then moved to Femadene for 3 months and told not to allow a bleed for 3 months which has been bliss. She is about to finish the 3rd month but has gained a lot of weight and often has mood swings. I would ideally like to take her off the pill altogether as she is so young. I live in a remote place (Victoria Falls Zimbabwe) so not so easy to see a good doctor. I was told that a few month on a pill would regulate her cycles what do you suggest? Can she come off the femodene now and see if her periods are more regular and less heavy. She is a slim sporty girl and the onset of menstration a year ago has been a nightmare for her.

Hi,

I can understand your concerns.

Ideally a young girl has irregular heaviy bleeds when she enters menses. But they are supposed to normalize by 2-3 years on their own without medicines (afterall that is how things have been since ages before these drugs came out)

Putting her on medicines will no way help her.

This phase is normal and called perimenarche.

I will advise you to stop all medicines and just eat healthy and drink lots of fluid during heavy menses.

It will be better as it will allow her body to adjust to menses over a few years.

If you give medicines now it will just disturb her hormonal axis and she will not be able to have regular menses.

Thank you so much how amazing I can sit here in XXXXXXX and speak to a doctor! I just want to say however that initially her periods were incredibly heavy and she was incapacitated. Unable to get through more than a 15 minute spell without changing sanitation. This was impossible way for a young girl at boarding school to live. There was a lot of clotting and she became anemic. The bleeds would last up to 3 weeks at a time. So the last 3 months on Femadene with no bleed has been a relief and she has had her life back. We were told a few months would regulate her.

I am delighted to hear you suggest she go off the pill and just hope the heavy bleeds do not resume now.

Question - would you say the 3 months has been a long enough time on this pill. She returns to school in 3 weeks.
